The Great Gatsby: Chapters 1-3

(1) “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you've had.” Chapter 1

Here the author is trying to explain to his audience that you should not criticize your own self because you have gotten to experience more things in this world than others probably have. The author is putting a lot of emphasis on "all the people" because it gives you a better view of who the author is trying to reach to when he is speaking to Nick. The author is also trying to prove that Nick has been through more challenges because other people haven't been through the advantages that he  has. Therefore, Nick has had a lucky life because he has gotten to experience the better things in life. Words (110)

(2) “And if you feel that way about it, maybe I’d better sell it somewhere else after all.” Chapter 2

The author starts discussing the selling of Tom's car between Tom and to another man from the ash heaps in between West Egg and New York. They begin talking casually with the other man asking about the deals and finding out its not turning out the way planned it would. Tom immediately replies and makes a scene as if the people of New York were more powerful than the people that have to work in the dumps. After he has said this, the man apologizes and then supports on the idea, also supporting the argument that the aristocrat likes people of the city are superior to that of the common people in society. (3) "I married him because I thought he was a gentleman...I thought he knew something about breeding, but
he wasn't fit to lick my shoe." Chapter 2

The author here explains that Myrtle did not actually want to marry the gentleman. She knew it was a mistake from the beginning and he also stole some man's best suit so he could wear it to the wedding. A real gentleman does not steal someone's suit, he would actually buy one on his own with own money. He didn't know anything about "breeding" so Myrtle did not want anything to do with the gentleman because he was nowhere close to "licking her shoe" or getting anywhere near her. Words (89)

(4) "Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known." Chapter 3

The author refers to the "cardinal virtues as the four moral virtues in Christianity. The English word cardinal comes from the Latin word cardo, which means "hinge." The four moral virtues are prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperature. Nick assumes that he himself is one the of the few he considers “honest people” that he knows. Everyone thinks of Nick so highly so getting this recommendation gives him really high standards of the way he acts. The author puts this in here because it gives the audience a good description of who Nick is and what his character is in the book. Words (101)

(5) "Life is much more successfully looked at from a single window…” Chapter 1

The author is referring life being more successful towards Nick. The characteristics that Nick has really do reflect on how Gatsby was. You can actually tell that he really did follow some of the traits his father had. The quote represents how you should take things in your own way and not take anyone else’s opinion for it. Make your own decisions in life, and don’t let others reflect on it. You should be able now, at your age be able to make the right choices and know what is right from wrong. So look at life in one eye perspective, and not different ones. Words (107)
