Lifeboat Ethics: the Case Against Helping the Poor

Each and everyday you will encounter positive and negative moments about your day. We humans like to usually look for the positive because that's what we like to hear. What we hear said about in this article is not so positive. This article says that poor countries should be minimal. That is not reality. Reality isn't that the world is a spaceship. Spaceships are cold hard environments. The world is in end not a hard environment. People do care for people. That is reality. People have compassion and believe that there are better solutions then death. There are technological advances people can make if they want to, if they look hard enough. People don't always see the positive in situations, but here is a place that society needs to see it. The idea of killing off the poor isn't a real solution because the line between rich and poor is natural. If you get rid of the 'poor' there will be another chain reaction of "poor" people occurring. It will be on a different level but it will still be there. Technological advancements can lead to a better construction of food for the the poor and those who need it. If we give them that technology then society has done what they can do for them. These poor countries can still exist just by themselves. If they don't want to do anything then that is their prerogative. America is so successful because of our constitution. America promises the "pursuit of happiness" meaning, all the resources like education are given to American's but they have to take initiative and use them. Maybe if other countries were given these resources they would become developed like the United States. Think about Mexico, they are not as developed as America but they have many hard working people that do take initiative and try to come to America and work hard here. These hard workers don't only lead to more developed countries economically but also politically and politically causes a more developed world as a whole. We do not need a whole new set up of governing with a bunch of representatives from different countries. We need to just do something. Many things that have to be contemplated over don't actually get done. Look at the United Nations, they don't do anything at all. Many countries coming together don't actually do anything which means we are just paying people more money for a better title, that don't contribute anything. That is a waste of money, time and resources. Instead we could be enhancing what we do have, the United Nations. The United Nations could be put into effect instead of "a toothless tiger" it could be a roaring lion. People don't understand the power that this world could have if every country just put aside their problems then the world could come full circle. With the combination of money and technology of all of the world the human race would be in a lot better place. But that is in an idle world and the world is most definitely not idle. The world is a place with many ups and downs but also a thoughtful one at that. Words: (553)
